Most Roche villagers are members of the Luo Tribe and the Kamegata Clan.
The relationship between the District government and the tribal government is complex. |
October 2008 – Village Life meeting w/ the Roche Village Council
We asked if there were any stories we should be aware of as we design the health center. The Village Leader, Alfred, told us that the full story would take 5 hours, so he told us the short version.
Basically, the Kamegata people were in Sudan until about 4 generations ago. The King at that time decided that they needed to settle in a more fertile land. They sent out a group who found this piece of land that they have provided for the Health Center. The Kamegata originally settled on this piece of land and soon after, a group of foreigners attempted to take the land. They were able to hold off the foreigners.
Before the King died, he told the people that the next group of foreigners who came should be welcomed by the community. This group of foreigners would be critical for the development of the people of Roche. They believe that Village Life and UC SAID are that group. Alfred is the great grandson of the King of the Kamegata tribe.
