VILLAGE LIFE OUTREACH PROJECT
Founded in 2004, Village Life Outreach Project, Inc. is an official 501 (c)3 non-profit organization based out of Cincinnati, Ohio whose mission is to unite communities to promote Life, Health and Education.
Most of Village Life’s work focuses on three remote and impoverished villages in the Rorya district of Tanzania, East Africa: Roche, Burere and Nyambogo, all located near Lake Victoria. VILLAGE LIFE GUIDING PRINCIPLES • Partnership • Sustainability • Collaboration • Long Term Commitment to Communities “Village leaders identify their own needs, then we strategize with them on how to solve those problems together. This buy-in solidifies the idea that they are going to do their part. It’s a ‘hand up rather than a hand out’.” — Dr. Chris Lewis, VLOP Founder |

College of Design, Architecture, Art and Planning (DAAP) The School of Architecture and Interior Design at the University of Cincinnati prepares students for critical engagement with practice. This critical engagement presupposes sustained evaluation of principles, traditions, and requirements of building in all its aspects, interior and exterior. Our goal is to advance the professions of architecture and interior design by combining ethical judgment and technical proficiency in pursuit of excellence, whether the product of our expertise is a physical or intellectual construction. In view of constantly changing conditions for practice, our program seeks to multiply insights and abilities in every student:

ARUP and the ARUP CAUSE
In Fall 2008, ARUP began a collaboration with the Roche Health Center design team. In 2008, we worked with ARUP Chicago and in 2009, we worked with ARUP Los Angeles and ARUP San Francisco.
On November 14th, 2008, our studio traveled to Chicago to meet at ARUP’s office. We presented to the team and introduced our project and process to the ARUP team. We addressed Structure, Water Supply, Sanitation, Mechanical, and our overall master plan. |

PUBLIC / PRIVATE PARTNERSHIP
On June 16, 2010, Dr, Chris Lewis and Michael Zaretsky of VLOP as well as Manaen and Josiah Kawira of SHED Foundation met with the Rorya District Medical Officer (DMO) regarding the development of the Roche Health Center. The DMO was extremely supportive of the project and pledged resources and assistance for the project.
On June 18, 2010, VLOP representatives Dr. Chris Lewis and Michael Zaretsky, along with SHED representatives Manaen and Josiah Kawira, met with the Rorya District Commissioner (DC) to discuss the progress of the Roche Health Center. The DC is the top government official for the entire Rorya District of 280,000 people, and is directly appointed by the Tanzanian President, Mr. Jakaya Kikwete. At this meeting, the DC pledged the District’s support for the Health Center project and discussed plans to bring the Regional Commissioner and other government officials to visit the site to learn about the research and technology being utilized in construction. The DC provided a letter of support acknowledging the Tanzanian Government’s interest in supporting Roche Health Center in a formal Public/Private Partnership, in which VLOP and SHED will administer the health center and the government will provide material resources and funding for staff salaries. |
ROCHE HEALTH CENTER COMMITTEE
ADDITIONAL STAKEHOLDERS
The People of Roche
Currently, Roche villagers in need of medical care typically walk 6-8 hours to the nearest healthcare facility to receive care. Pregnant women in labor lose babies while making this trek. Injured and ill villagers who are unable to make the journey suffer hopelessly at home. Roche Health Center will provide the first-ever access to permanent healthcare in the region, and will provide examples of safe, durable construction techniques that will revolutionize local building. Doctors and Nurses The health center must attract well-trained doctors and nurses to move to the area so that health care can be constant in Roche. The health center will include highly desirable housing to entice talented health care professionals to work in Roche Village. VLOP & SHED While the facility will be run and staffed by Tanzanian health-care professionals, VLOP, SHED, and other partners will provide health services in the Center. The facility must accommodate medical personnel visiting from other areas. There will be areas for shared resources and education. Future Tanzanians The tremendous research behind this project can be disseminated to benefit other regions throughout Tanzania. The design is a demonstration of sustainable building techniques that can be replicated by the people who see and use the health center. |
